A MacBook rental ends in one of three ways: you renew on the same Macs, move to current models, or hand them back. Decide which before month 35, and decide now who wipes the data, because a returned Mac leaves your building with whatever is on it.
The three ways a rental ends
| Renew | Upgrade | Return | |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Macs | Stay with the same people | Swapped for current models | Collected |
| Your work | Sign the renewal | Migrate data to the new Macs | Wipe before collection |
| Good for | Macs still doing the job | Teams on demanding work | A project or team that has ended |
Wipe through your device management, before collection
If your Macs are enrolled in Apple Business Manager and a device management service, the cleanest return is a remote wipe from that service, then release from Apple Business Manager. Do it before the courier arrives, not after. Keep a record of each serial number and the date it was wiped. Audit and security teams will ask for it.
If a Mac is not enrolled, erase it by hand from macOS and sign the user out of their Apple Account first, so the Mac is not locked to them when it reaches the next person.
What India's data protection law says
The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 requires a business holding personal data to erase it once the purpose it was collected for is no longer being served, and to make its processors do the same: Section 8(7) of the Act. It does not prescribe how to wipe a laptop.
Timing matters. Under the commencement notification published with the DPDP Rules on 13 November 2025, Section 8 and the security rules take effect eighteen months after that date, which is mid-May 2027. Building a wipe-and-record step into every return now means there is nothing to change then.
What the e-waste rules say, and why renting changes it
India's E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022 define a bulk consumer as an entity that used at least one thousand units of listed electrical and electronic equipment in a financial year, and Rule 8 requires a bulk consumer to hand its e-waste only to a registered producer, refurbisher or recycler. Laptops, notebooks and tablets are on the list. The rules are on the Central Pollution Control Board's site.
A bought Mac becomes your e-waste at the end of its life. A rented Mac goes back to the company that owns it, so its disposal is not yours to arrange.
How it works with us
Our rentals run 12, 24 or 36 months. At the end, you renew on the same Macs, move to current models, or hand them back, and we collect from wherever they are in India. Wipe them through your device management before collection. How renting works has the full terms.

Questions
What happens at the end of a MacBook rental?
You renew on the same Macs, upgrade to current models, or return them. The rental company collects returned Macs; you wipe the data before collection.
How should a company wipe a rented Mac before returning it?
Remotely through your device management service if the Mac is enrolled, then release it from Apple Business Manager. Otherwise erase it in macOS after signing the user out of their Apple Account. Record the serial number and the date.
Does India's DPDP Act require data to be erased from returned laptops?
Section 8(7) requires personal data to be erased once its purpose is no longer served. It does not prescribe a method for devices. Section 8 takes effect eighteen months after 13 November 2025, in mid-May 2027.
Who disposes of a rented laptop under India's e-waste rules?
A rented device goes back to its owner, the rental company. A company that buys its laptops and is a bulk consumer must hand its e-waste only to a registered producer, refurbisher or recycler under Rule 8.
