When an enterprise buys Apple hardware through an authorised DPP partner, the device serial numbers are registered under the customer's ABM organisation ID at Apple's backend. This enables zero-touch MDM deployment — when an employee powers on their new Mac, iPad, or iPhone for the first time, the device automatically checks in with Apple, sees it's registered to the enterprise's ABM, and auto-enrols into the MDM (Jamf, Intune, Kandji, Mosyle, Workspace ONE, Hexnode) with security policies pre-applied. ABM replaced Apple's older DEP (Device Enrolment Program) and VPP (Volume Purchase Program) in 2019, unifying device management and app distribution under one interface.
